Chapter One of CULTIC includes 10 maps full of blood, grit, and of course, cultists. Their wretched minds twisted by the will of an unseen entity, you’ll find just as much lead flying back as you dish out, so you’ll have to run, slide, dodge, and make use of your environment to survive in this old-school-inspired shooter. Gear up to fight your way through the ranks of an insidious cult. In Blood you just light it on fire and depending on your skill you could get it to fly exactly where you want it. It’s not bad, but it feels a little too cumbersome with lighting the fuse being a seperate action. I’m not really sure if I like the dynamite yet. A Super Shotgun should sound like the finger of god (See also Bulletstorm Quad Shotgun, Quake II Super Shotgun, DOOM 2016 Super Shotgun, Wolfenstein New Order Shotgun, …). The Double-Barreled Shotgun needs a bit more work.

The cultists in CULTIC are also still human, I presume? So they should respond appropriately when I riddle them with bullets. While they are under the spell of an ancient evil, they’re still HUMAN, and therefore it feels all the more impactful when they scream their hearts out. While there is a death sound, the first two aren’t present and this detracts from the experience that something is there in the room with you. In a game like Quake 2, an enemy always has an idle sound, a detect sound and a death sound. I played on the medium setting so I was fine, but I can imagine any enemy being a royal pain in the ass on harder difficulties by how accurate they are. The enemies seem to have two modes: either they instantly know where you are whenever you get in a 250yd range of them or you can violently murder entire groups and have the next group just pretend nothing has happened, as if they’re hoping you’ll go away on your own. The AI? It’s not ready for primetime yet.

I’ll update as I play more, but for $10, it’s highly recommended. And this is all made by one guy? Really impressive stuff. There’s so many little details that just add to the overall experience, from the ambient buzz of an electric light to the way you reload your lever-action rifle differently with your lighter out because you’re doing it one-handed. Other than the difficulty, I have no problems with the game. Maybe I should play on Extreme, so could be my bad on this. I felt the demo was harder, as it feels like the enemy aim and range has been toned down a lot for this Chapter 1 release.

Not saying it should be as ball-bustingly hard as Blood is on hard difficulties, but maybe some adjustment is in order. Combat is very chunky and satisfying, but the difficulty on Very Hard actually seems way too easy so far, especially with the addition of the field kit which can be replenished with the already plentiful health drops. Great shooter with impressive attention to detail and excellent level design (with secrets that are very organic and logical and fun to find). You, your guns, and your dynamite will have to shoot, slide, blast, duck, dodge, and maybe throw a gib or two to survive in this old-school-inspired shooter. Crawl from your grave and gear up to fight your way through the ranks of a mysterious and twisted cult.
